When the fridge dies… it’s time for a reset

What do you do when the fridge dies, or in my case, the freezer? A few weeks ago, I noticed that things in my freezer weren’t frozen as solid as usual. I thought, that’s weird. Over the next day or two, things in the freezer became more rubbery cold than frozen. Uh oh. That’s when I knew I had a problem.

It took a couple of days for the repair guy to come out. He said it was going to cost as much to repair it as it would for a whole new fridge. And of course the new one that fit was backordered and was expected to arrive in three weeks. Three weeks!

The first thing was to use up what I could of the frozen food that was still safe. I made a couple of dishes with the frozen chicken. (Thank goodness for my Instant Pot!)

And then I thought about how to manage my eating in the next three weeks. I realized it was a good “reset” moment. I had been relying on too much frozen (healthy) food as a quick fix for meals. Since the freezer wasn’t an option, I started buying more fresh food, because the refrigerator compartment worked just fine. And it really didn’t take much longer to prepare fresh meals. I could put some veggies on to steam while I settled in and got comfy after getting home from work. I cooked up a bunch of rice that I could eat for a few days. I rocked the Instant Pot, because it’s so fast and convenient.

The experience was a good way for me to realize that I had gotten a bit lazy with my meals, and it got me back on track. When life throws us these unexpected surprises, it’s a good time to reevaluate your eating habits and use them as a “reset” button.

You can use this post as your own personal “reset” if you need one. Especially since the holidays are creeping closer with their minefield of unhealthy foods. Now’s a great time to hit reset if you need to and get back on track.

The good news: my new fridge arrived a week earlier than expected (yay!). And I’m still eating more fresh and freshly prepared food, rather than frozen foods.
