It’s the time of year people are making summer plans and thinking about getting back in their bathing suits. And then they think about what they need to do to fit into last year’s suit, how much weight they want to lose, and the crazy diets start.

So, I’m starting a series of Weight Loss Lies. Today is Part 1, and is one of my favorite rants about some of my most hated chemicals: artificial sweeteners. Want the bottom line? They’re bad – don’t consume them. Oh wait – you want to know why? Ok, then…

First off, none of them should ever have been approved by the FDA as safe. They’re not. If you think the FDA is looking out for our health, think again. The FDA has a revolving door with the drug companies. Work at the FDA, then get a nice cushy job at a drug company. And if you work at the FDA, and know there’s a nice cushy job at a drug company waiting for you after your FDA term is up, are you going to bite the hand you’re hoping to feed you? Nope. Can you say “conflict of interest?” Yep. I knew you could.

Back to artificial sweeteners. They all have side effects and are dangerous. Remember when Sweet and Low (the pink packages) were banned? They were banned because they cause cancer. They also used to have a warning label on those pink packages. It’s been back on the market for a while now, and big surprise – no warning label! It gave rats cancer and they banned it. It’s the exact same chemical. Why the hell is it back on the market?

Think the newer artificial sweeteners are safer? Sorry, they’re not. I just love the way they market Sucralose/ Splenda (the yellow packages). They say it’s made from sugar. That’s nice, but it sure isn’t sugar now. When they make it from sugar, they chlorinate it. With chlorine. You know, the stuff you put in your pool, and will kill you if you drink it. Yummy. Side effects of Splenda: digestive problems, migraines, dizziness, and wait for it… weight gain.

The most popular, Aspartame, sold as Equal or NutraSweet (the blue packages) is also implicated in causing cancer. And it’s in thousands of packaged foods, prescription and over-the-counter drugs, toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gum and dental floss. A while back I bought some unflavored dental floss, and it was coated with this stuff. Yuck! I brushed my teeth and they were nice and clean, and then flossed and got a sickeningly sweet chemical taste. Eww. And, even more horrifying to me, was that it wasn’t listed on the package as an ingredient! I have no idea how they got around the labelling rules. FDA buddies, maybe?

I threw away that nasty dental floss, and tried every store and drug store to find one that wasn’t coated in artificial sweeteners. I couldn’t find one locally, anywhere. In this case, Amazon was a good choice. It’s the only place I could find it, so I buy it in bulk now.

Hint: if your dental floss tastes sweet, guess what, it’s coated with artificial sweeteners. Which are toxic. (I can’t remember which one is safe as I write this, but if you want to know, just contact me and I’ll check and let you know.)

I hate generalizations, and here’s probably the only one you’ll ever hear from me: I don’t believe anyone should ever consume artificial sweeteners for any reason. Let me repeat that. I don’t believe anyone should ever consume artificial sweeteners for any reason. They’re all toxic. Every single one.

I can already hear you asking, what about diabetics and people that want to avoid sugar? Still. Artificial sweeteners are not safe. As bad as sugar is, artificial sweeteners are much worse.

If their toxicity isn’t enough to convince you, they’re also highly addictive. Good for business if you sell artificial sweeteners, bad for your health.

Think they’re good for dieting? Another lie. They actually cause weight gain. It becomes a chicken or egg situation, where which came first – the artificial sweeteners, or the fat?

Here’s how it happens: remember basic biology and those taste buds on your tongue? When the taste buds detect sweet flavors, they tell your brain that food is coming. That starts a bunch of chemical processes in your digestive system to get ready to digest the food your body thinks is coming. But since the artificial sweeteners have no calories, there’s nothing to digest. But your body is prepared to digest food, but there’s no food. That makes you feel hungry. And the cycle starts. You feel hungry, so you eat. Or drink another diet soda, which starts the process all over again. And again. And again…

If you use artificial sweeteners, and/or drink diet soda, it’s time to stop. Right now. Don’t buy them and don’t use the packages in restaurants. Hopefully you see that they can actually cause weight gain, not weight loss, along with a host of other problems.
